GIZ - Advisory Service for Environmental Management


Deutsche Gesellschaft für Technische Zusammenarbeit (GTZ) GmbH (German Technical Cooperation) changed its name to The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH on 1 January 2011. It also merged with among others, InWEnt – Capacity Building International, Germany. It is owned by the German Government and works in the field of international cooperation for sustainable development. GIZ is also engaged in international education work around the globe and currently operates in more than 130 countries worldwide.

GIZ in India

Germany has been cooperating with India by providing expertise through the organisations now forming GIZ for more than 50 years. To address India's priority of sustainable and inclusive growth, GIZ's joint efforts with the partners in India currently focus on the areas:

  • Energy- Renewable energy and energy efficiency
  • Sustainable Urban and Industrial Development
  • Natural Resource Management
  • Private Sector Development
  • Social Protection
  • Financial Systems Development
  • HIV/AIDS-Blood Safety

GIZ’s ASEM (Advisory Services in Environmental Management) programme is a joint programme of the Ministry of Environment & Forests (MoEF), Government of India and GIZ (on behalf of BMZ). Advisory Services in Environmental Management (ASEM) programme is the umbrella programme for projects relating to industrial and urban environmental protection and consumer protection. ASEM advises and supports the Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF) and the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution (MoCA), the Ministry of Urban Development (MoUD) and the Ministry of Housing & Urban Poverty Alleviation (MoH&UPA).

ASEM focuses on major thrust areas, namely,

  • Sustainable Urban Habitat (SUH)
  • Sustainable Industrial Development (SID)
  • Sustainable Environment Governance (SEG)
  • Sustainable Consumption and Consumer Protection (SCCP)

Cross Cutting Thrust Areas:

  • Human Resource Development (HRDP)
  • Public Private Partnership (PPP)
