Arun Gulab Gawli, also known as Arun Gulab Ahir, is an Indian politician, former gangster, and retired underworld figure. Born on July 17, 1955, Gawli and his brother Kishor (Pappa) became involved in the Mumbai underworld during the 1970s by joining the “Byculla Company,” a criminal gang led by Rama Naik and Babu Reshim. This gang operated in central Mumbai areas like Byculla, Parel, and Saat Rasta.

After Rama Naik’s death in a police encounter in 1988, Gawli assumed leadership of the gang and operated it from his residence known as Dagdi Chawl. Under his control, the gang dominated criminal activities in central Mumbai. During the late 1980s and 1990s, Gawli’s gang engaged in a rivalry with Dawood Ibrahim’s D-Company gang. Besides his underworld associations, Gawli founded the Akhil Bharatiya Sena political party in Maharashtra.

Arun Gawli, also known as DADDY in the underworld, had a diverse journey. He started his career working in textile mills in Mumbai’s central areas, like Parel, Chinchpokli, Byculla, and Cotton Green. During the 1970s and late 1980s, due to mass strikes and mill closures, many young adults, including Gawli, turned to quick money-making methods like matka gambling and extortion (hafta-vasuli).

Gawli joined the “Byculla Company” gang, led by Rama Naik and Babu Reshim. He managed illegal liquor dens and later took charge of the gang after the demise of its leaders. This gang gained fame as the “BRA Gang” named after the initials of Rama Naik, Babu Reshim, and Arun Gawli. He became a prominent Marathi gang leader, with his gang expanding to Pune under the influence of Ajit Bhai Lawand. Gawli’s involvement in criminal activities led to police raids on his base at Dagdi Chawl. He faced several arrests and trials, but many witnesses hesitated to testify due to fear of retaliation.

In 2012, Gawli was convicted for the murder of Shiv Sena leader Kamlakar Jamsandekar and sentenced to life imprisonment. Despite this, he had political ties, initially with Shiv Sena and later forming his own party, Akhil Bharatiya Sena. He served as an MLA in 2004, symbolizing his local roots in Mumbai’s Chinchpokli constituency. His political journey saw challenges, including his nephew Sachin Ahir’s opposition and switch to a different party. Gawli’s daughter Geeta was also a former corporator. While Gawli’s path has been marked by both criminal activities and political involvement, his story remains a complex mix of triumphs and setbacks.
