He was born to parents Kewal Krishan and Satwant Kaur into a Punjabi Jat family. His ancestral village is Dangon, near Pakhowal Tehsil Raikot, Ludhiana. During his early years, he grew up in the village of Sahnewal and attended Government Senior Secondary School in Lalton Kalan, Ludhiana. His father was the village school headmaster. Dharmendra completed his matriculation in Phagwara in 1952. At that time, schools in Punjab were under the jurisdiction of Panjab University, Chandigarh.
