The Success Story of Sir Isaac Newton, One of the greatest scientists in the world

The Success Story of Sir Isaac Newton- Isaac Newton’s life can be divided into three distinct periods. The first period covers his boyhood from 1643 to his appointment to a chair in 1669. The second period, from 1669 to 1687, was highly productive, during which he held the position of Lucasian professor at Cambridge. The third and longest period saw Newton as a well-paid government official in London, with little interest in further mathematical research.

Isaac Newton was born in Woolsthorpe, near Grantham in Lincolnshire. While he was born on Christmas Day 1642 by the calendar of his time, we use the date of January 4, 1643, in this biography to match our current calendar (the Gregorian calendar, which was adopted in England in 1752). Isaac’s father, also named Isaac Newton, passed away three months before his son’s birth. Despite his father’s wealth in property and animals, he was uneducated and unable to sign his own name.

Isaac’s mother, Hannah Ayscough, married Barnabas Smith, the minister of the church in North Witham, a nearby village, when Isaac was two years old. Isaac was left in the care of his grandmother, Margery Ayscough, at Woolsthorpe, effectively treated as an orphan. Isaac’s grandfather, James Ayscough, was never mentioned by Isaac in later life, and the absence of any inheritance for Isaac in James’s will, made when Isaac was ten, suggests a strained relationship. Isaac harbored bitterness toward his mother and step-father, Barnabas Smith. In a self-examination at age nineteen, Isaac listed his grievances.

The Success Story of Sir Isaac Newton

Newton’s most significant accomplishment was his work in physics and celestial mechanics, culminating in the theory of universal gravitation. By 1666, he had developed early versions of his three laws of motion and discovered the law governing centrifugal force on a body moving uniformly in a circular path. However, he did not fully grasp the mechanics of circular motion.

Isaac Newton was not only the greatest mathematician, physicist, and astronomer of his generation but also an influential author. His discoveries in optics, calculus, and the formulation of the three laws of motion, which are the foundational principles of modern physics, establish his importance. Nevertheless, Sir Isaac Newton faced challenges and hardships on his path to success during his upbringing.

Early life and Hurdles Faced By Newton

Newton came from a farming family but never knew his father, who passed away three months before Isaac’s birth. He was born prematurely, and the doctor had little hope for his survival, but miraculously, he survived as a very small child. His early childhood was challenging, as his mother remarried when he was three, and he didn’t get along with his stepfather. He spent much of his childhood living with his grandmother, and it was far from a happy time. He didn’t have many friends to play with, so he occupied himself with small mechanical devices and models.

After nine years, his mother returned home following her husband’s death. Isaac was admitted to a new school two years later, where he stayed with his uncle. In school, he focused more on independent pursuits and struggled with his studies. However, his mother took him out of school and put him to work on the family farm, a job he despised and showed no interest in. Fortunately, the headmaster of King’s School recognized Isaac’s intelligence and persuaded his mother to send him back to school to complete his education. Without this support, he might have remained a farmer for life. Back at school, Isaac excelled and became the top-ranked student.

His Later Life and Journey Towards Success

Isaac’s mother couldn’t afford his fees for Cambridge University, so he worked to earn money by cleaning scholars’ rooms, serving at the high table, and doing odd jobs for his seniors. At Cambridge, he began developing his early theories about motion and forces. In 1665, he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree. However, the universities closed due to the Plague that same year. Over the next eighteen months, from 1665 to 1667, Newton developed the theory of gravity, discovered differential calculus, studied white light, and formulated the three laws of motion. The following year, he published his influential book “Principia,” which remains one of the most significant works in physics.

In 1669, Cambridge appointed Newton as a professor, but he showed little interest in teaching or interacting with students. His lectures had few attendees, and sometimes, no one attended at all. In 1678, he experienced severe emotional breakdowns, and the next year, his mother passed away. In response, Newton withdrew from social contact and focused entirely on his research. On March 20, 1727, Sir Isaac Newton passed away at the age of 84.

Lessons We Can Learn From Isaac Newton

Newton encountered many hardships during his challenging childhood, which influenced his personality and made him protective of his privacy. However, this didn’t prevent him from becoming one of the world’s greatest scientists. Newton is one of the most influential scientists of the 17th century, and his groundbreaking work forms the basis of modern physics. He once compared himself to a boy playing on the seashore, finding interesting pebbles and shells while the vast ocean of truth remained undiscovered. In essence, he urged people to confront challenges and explore the deeper truths in their chosen fields.

If you have a dream and a strong desire to succeed, you must fully engage in it, work diligently, and surround yourself with like-minded individuals. When we are passionate about our pursuits, we gain a more positive outlook, increased energy, and greater confidence. We are not just going through the motions; instead, we actively work toward achieving the success we desire.
