759 lakh metric tonnes of food grains allocated for 80 crore beneficiaries

The Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Package, initiated by the Indian Government in March 2020, aimed to support 80 crore National Fertilizer Security Act beneficiaries during the economic challenges of the pandemic. Additional and free food grains were provided under this scheme. It effectively doubled the monthly food supply to Antyodaya Yojana and priority families. In its five phases, 759 lakh metric tonnes of food grains, worth around Rs 2.6 lakh crore, were allocated to states and union territories for distribution. Approximately 580 lakh metric tonnes of food grains have already been distributed to the beneficiaries, enhancing food security for those in need.

Extension of Pradhanmantri Garib Kalyan Yojana

The fourth phase of the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Yojana, initiated by the Government, is underway. The scheme will provide additional food grains to National Food Security Act beneficiaries until November 30, 2021, as per the Union Ministry of Consumer Affairs. This extension was decided during a meeting chaired by the Prime Minister on June 23, 2021. The Prime Minister had also announced this extension to Diwali while addressing the nation on June 7, 2021. The scheme was initially started for two months due to the COVID-19 pandemic, incurring an estimated expenditure of Rs 26,602 crore.
